पांच दशक पहले 22 अप्रैल, 1970 को पहली बार पृथ्वी दिवस मनाया गया था, ताकि पर्यावरण को हो रहे नुकसान के रूप में हमारे अपने ग्रह के भविष्य को मिल रही चुनौतियों की ओर गंभीरता से ध्यान आकर्षित किया जा सके। यहां तक कि उस समय भी बेहिसाब ढंग से लैंड यूज बदले जा रहे थे, प्राकृतिक संसाधनों का अंधाधुंध दोहन, पारिस्थितिकी के लिहाज से संवेदनशील क्षेत्रों में अतिक्रमण, वन्यजीवों के प्रति अपराध और अंधाधुंध विकास शुरू हो चुका था, जिससे पृथ्वी के सीमित संसाधनों को नुकसान पहुंचने लगा। बढ़ रहा है प्रदूषण, कचरे से भर रहे हैं समुद्र  चीन, इंडोनेशिया, थाईलैंड, फिलीपींस और वियतनाम दुनिया में प्लास्टिक से सर्वाधिक प्रदूषण फैलाने वाले देशों में शुमार हैं। समुद्रों का तकरीबन एक तिहाई हिस्सा प्लास्टिक की गंदगी से अटा पड़ा है। समुद्र का पानी प्लास्टिक को विघटित कर देता है। प्लास्टिक के छोटे-छोटे कणों और अणुओं को मछलियां खा जाती हैं और इनके अंश मछलियों के शरीर में पाए गए हैं। इस तरह प्लास्टिक हमारी खाद्य शृंखला में शामिल होकर हमारी डाइनिंग टेबिल तक पहुंच जाता है। इससे मानव जीवन के लिए खतरा बढ़ता जा रहा है...
